After studying with Kaare Klint in Copenhagen, he headed the furniture design department of the Danish Cooperative Union (FDB) from 1942 to 1950. It was during this period, in 1947, that he designed a simple and refined chair, the J-39 Shaker, very influenced by the purity and integrity of American Shaker furniture, itself inspired by the British Arts & Crafts movement.
