Exceptional painting of josé tinchant y gonzales cigars, made in chromolithograph by hermann schött in 1890. Protected by a gilded frame and a window. The beautiful chromolithography advertising sign from the 1890s′s, embossed and largely inlaid with gilding, pictured above, is one of the most striking advertising pieces we have ever come across. To say that chromolithography is of the highest quality is an understatement – this sign is the perfect example of the finest art and craftsmanship of lithographic art. It is signed by lithographer hermann schott, who, together with klingenberg bros., produced many of the most elaborate and sought-after cigar labels of the same style and era. But beyond the beauty of the poster, it is its content that makes the whole story. The brand advertises "don jose" cigars made by "jose tinchant y gonzales & co. Cigars", owned and operated by joseph tinchant, african-american cigar manufacturer, new orleans creole, "free man of color" and second lieutenant of the 6th louisiana volunteers (colored) during the civil war. In the center of the sign is a magnificent portrait of joseph tinchant himself!.
