Large tramp art mirror, folk art, late 19th-early 20th century. In very good condition. "Developed from the European tradition of wood carving for decorative purposes, brought to the United States by European immigrants, tramp art appeared during the second half of the 19th century, and more particularly from the 1870s, before reaching its peak during the Great Depression. This folk art is characterized by the carving and cutting of small pieces of wood with notched edges from recycled materials, including cigar boxes and crates, in order to create simple geometric shapes and patterns. These small pieces are then assembled, then glued or nailed in thin successive layers to give birth to everyday objects, such as jewelry boxes, caskets, frames, clock cases, cache-pots or mirrors, sometimes using these same objects as a preliminary base, and more rarely on more imposing objects" (wikipedia).
